I find this also running an nvidia 8600 card with the nvidia 270.30 drivers running the standard ubuntu compiz 1:0.9.4+bzr20110407-0ubuntu2.
Turning on the "unredirect full-screen" option doesn't seem to make any difference for full-screen wine games. The glxgears animation is especially slow jerky. It reports a framerate of 3500 fps but the animation only changes around every half a second - sometimes it freezes for several seconds.
