I've got a similar trouble in a particular case: - wait until the monitor is going to sleep - move the mouse before gnome-screensaver lock the session - wait that the monitor display an image => See that the image is the same that before the monitor went to sleep. The cursor move but it is a "selection" cursor, whatever the part of the screen it is over - go to first console, log in - kill -9 `pidof compiz` - go to X console - see the screen (unity and windows) being redrawn => The desktop can be use normally
