Actually 'fresh install' is not entirely true. Initially, I upgraded and had a problem (viz certain NVidia packages failed to install, but showed up as installed in Synaptic) - so I used the liveCD to repeat the process (same result) and then removed and reinstalled Nvidia drivers...
