Ever after 270.XX version have to roll back to 260 version to get nvidia drivers working with compiz. As described before, it gives still immage on log in, and the sollution is to kill compiz to "unfreeze" it. Xorg.0.log doesn't seem to have any errors... Also have GeForce 7300 GS. The problem seems to affect especially these cards.
