what happens if you log into Ubuntu Classic (no effects)? If it works then go to CompizConfig Settings manager and turn off open gl and all of the things dependent on it, log out, and log back in into Ubuntu Classic. If this works then you have the same problem as me. It should work like this, but then you don't get any fancy effects.
