I'm off exams. The problem is that we are doing shadow clipping in compiz in a rather inefficient way which is causing a lot of CPU usage on some systems. I have a branch which optimizes a lot of this, though I noticed from profiling that we are still doing a lot in the wall plugin so I'm going to look there also.
