Thanks for your help, but somehow I managed to get Compiz to work. I reset all of the Compiz settings, rebooted my computer, and then added the effects one by one, and it started working.
Hard to tell if its the same issue as Bug #877790 but it does seem similar. Not sure if this is still a valid bug report, but I did notice a significant number of people having similar issues with 11.10 when I was searching for a solution.
