After my last posting, I found out, that installer went for nvidia
driver - nvidia-common.

When I tried nvidia-common (not installed per default in 11.10), it did freeze
my laptop as well and I removed it again.
(was not reported that time).

Removed nvidia using:
  sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia-common nvidia-current nvidia-settings

Rebooted into 'nouveau' driver, which is working now for a longer time
than before with nvidia. Will post further results.
