This just happened to me, with Liferea instead of Firefox : Liferea was black and white, but responsive, on 11.10. Compiz was taking ~50% of the CPU, during the same time, I guess to render everything black and white. It's the 1st time I encountered this bug, and it disappeared when I killed Liferea (kill -9 was needed).
