You have been subscribed to a public bug:
After logging in with unity-greeter the screen is distorded displaying a chaos
of random pixels. After three to eight seconds the normal user background
appears again and the unity-session wil be loaded normally.
This problem went on since this bug appeared:

I use ubuntu 12.04 with a radeon 5000HD and tried various drivers:
radeon/fglrx/fgrlx-update(currently)
All had the same problem
