On my machine, this problem seems to be related to chromium app tabs - when the app tab is blinking with notification, the cpu usage by compiz goes to ~ 50 %. Otherwise it is < 10 %. 17.0.963.79 (Developer Build 125985 Linux) Ubuntu 11.10 with Unity
