Hi Oli, I have the exact same problem you experienced, using either Ubuntu 12.04 with gnome classic + effects or Xubuntu 12.04 using compiz instead of the xfwm.
As you can see, I also did a bug report on it (I must have missed yours): https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/985651 It's good to know, I am not the only one.
