I can confirm that quickly pressing Alt+ left arrow will both cause firefox to go back one page and then cause the HUD to appear.
In fact, as far as I can tell, the *only* reason that this doesn't happen every single time is that if you hold down Alt too long, it times out and shows the global menu instead of activating the HUD. So basically, pressing or not pressing the arrow key makes no difference, the only thing that matters is how long you hold down Alt. Of course, this isn't the case with most other keys.
