The appearance and placement of the buttons is actually dynamically
configurable. Please try this command to restore the default button
layout:
gsettings reset org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences button-layout
And then verify:
gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences button-layout
'close,minimize,maximize:'
