@j-a-o, bryan-larsen and all others affected by this: You can use the "Cube" and "Rotate Cube" plugins as workaround until this is fixed.
In the "Rotate Cube" plugin, "Bindings" tab you can set up shortcuts for "rotating to cube face X" and also for "rotating to cube face X with window".
