Similar problem here. I had fully desinstalled llvm-3.1, including libllvm-3.1; this triggered desinstallation of libgl1-mesa-dri (which I did not pay attention to). At next reboot, no GLX acceleration, and when logging in, Unity does not start (nothing except wallpaper and desktop background menu).
In the absence of GLX acceleration, for whatever reason, there should be a fallback.
