@Sam in reply to #61: I removed compiz-experimental and installed your ppa instead, but unfortunately it doesn't fix it.
Here is how I reproduce it (I'm running Gnome 3 in fallback mode, but gnome-panel): 1) Open gedit, and maximize it 2) Close gedit (it will remember it was maximized) 3) Open gedit: it opens maximized 4) Try to use titlebar buttons: here it fails, the window just lose focus...
