Subject: invitation to participate: online conference on BRAVE NEW
INTERFACES
Dear All,
With BRAVE NEW INTERFACES, CROSSTALKS wants to stimulate new
research projects and collaborations from interdisciplinary and
bottom-up perspectives on the intersection of the arts,
architecture, demography, electronics, music, energy, social
dynamics and design.
"Brave New Interfaces" consisted of a seminar, some workshops and a
publication zooming in on the conditions, processes and methods
leading to better design concepts and products. To share the most
relevant insights, the most provoking presentations and to
instigate further debate, CROSSTALKS invites you to join us for a
virtual conference on the renowned CNRS platform http://
www.interdisciplines.org/interfaces.
A text by Hugo De Man opens the discussion (for an abstract, please
scroll down). You can join the discussion whenever you want. To
visualize the text, click on its title in the main page of the
workshop: www.interdisciplines.org/interfaces
The text opens into a new page and you will find the forum to the
right. You can visualize texts and discussions in a printer-
friendly format which at the same time allows you to read the
messages in a cronological order.
To launch a new discussion, click on the button "Start a new
discussion", or respond to an ongoing discussion by clicking on the
button "Reply to".
Write your message title, the text itself, your full name and your
email. Then send the message. The system will show you the message,
which you can correct if you need to. Once you approve the message,
the moderators will receive it, and will put it on line, if it
suits the format of the discussion.
Please, note some requirements for your messages to be accepted:
1. messages cannot be longer than 400 words in order to keep the
discussion readable
2. 2.they must be of general interest and address the questions
raised in the debate
3. messages which advertise personal publications or website
will not be considered.
If any question on the project, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
We hope you will enjoy an enriching discussion!
See you soon on www.interdisciplines.org/interfaces

ABSTRACT - The enormous wealth creation of the 20th century was
based on two technological revolutions: the first was based on
fossil fuel energy and led to the invention of engines that took
over manual labor and created mechanical mobility. The second was
based on electricity as energy carrier, allowing the easy
distribution of energy to factories in order to produce material
goods. The key production factors were manual labor and capital.
Will the 21st century be more of the same? And what technologies
will dominate? How will these technologies interface with people
and how will they help to solve the challenges of the 21st century?
These are the questions we will try to tackle in this article.
About the organizers :
Discuss policy-probing issues while interweaving practices from
various
scientific disciplines, from different innovative companies and
from the
arts. Convinced that this combination of methodologies and backgrounds
is an inspiring stepping-stone towards innovation and creativity, the
Vrije Universiteit Brussel launched CROSSTALKS in 2003. CROSSTALKS
offers a cross-disciplinary platform to researchers, thinkers and
decision makers. They can meet in an open, yet compelling public space
(by means of a conference, a workshop, a text or cyberspace) where in
the first place a common ground is created through exchanging
knowledge,
visions and perspectives. More info on http://crosstalks.vub.ac.be
