You are invited to our Thinking Café! A place for discussion of research
topics floating in the enormous space in between disciplines. Because our
ideas shouldn’t just stay inside our head, they are created through
feedback with other research, with each other, with the practical world.
For now, the concept of the Thinking Café is to first have a small
introduction of the topic, after which we discuss in small groups, to then
put our insights together.
We’ll provide some food and drinks, but feel free to share your own!
But this concept might change through experimentation, and you can form it!
You can also propose topics and vote on already proposed ones via :

*Place: *CLEA House, Krijgskundestraat 33, Oudergem

*Topic: *Psychedelics
Throughout history different human societies have promoted the use of
different substances that we call “drugs”. Drugs are typically defined as a
substance that cause a change in an organisms physiological or
psychological state. Some people drink alcohol to become less socially
inhibited, or smoke cigarettes to relax with a release of dopamine. In this
thinking cafe we are going to stretch the boundaries of what we normally
consider when we say the word “drug”, and discuss “psychedelics”.
Psychedelics are a class of “drug” that includes mescaline, LSD, psilocybin
and DMT. These compounds produces extraordinary effects in and for
cognition, including thought, visual and auditory changes for consciousness
that are often described as beyond the normal range of perceptions and
conceptions. Psychedelics have been used by various indigenous and ancient
societies, often in sacred, ceremonial or religious contexts, as a right of
passage in development, or to facilitate community cohesion, or even to
worship the divine and the eternal. Of course, in our social and historical
context, psychedelics are often classified as illegal, and discussion about
their properties are often riddled with ill-informed prejudice and taboo.
However, this may all be changing, as increased awareness of the positive
benefits of psychedelics is reaching the mainstream in the form of books,
documentaries, and increasingly, academic and scientific research. Join us
for a night to explore the phenomenon of psychedelics and how these
compounds could be used to expand our understanding of consciousness.

Discussion coordinated by Cadell Last (CLEA) and Susan Guner (London Real).
