Longevity is increasing worldwide, but more slowly than in decades past: indeed
it has largely flatlined in the West. Can we resume the earlier pace of
progress? I will argue that there is much that people can do to postpone the
health problems that await them late in life, including optimisations of diet,
lifestyle and stress management - but that the magnitude of the benefit that
most people can realistically achieve by such means is quite modest and must
not be overstated. By contrast, the longevity research community is making
major and accelerating strides towards the development of medical treatments
that will confer much larger benefits - and those who are already in middle age
or older when such medicines arrive will benefit the most. I will summarise the
nature of these foreseeable medical advances and why more and more experts are
saying they are within reach.

About the speaker:

Dr. Aubrey de Grey is a biomedical gerontologist based in Mountain View,
California, USA, and is the Chief Science Officer of SENS Research Foundation,
a California-based 501(c)(3) biomedical research charity that performs and
funds laboratory research dedicated to combating aging. In addition, he is
Editor-in-Chief of Rejuvenation Research, the world’s highest-impact
peer-reviewed journal focused on intervention in aging. He received his BA in
computer science and Ph.D. in biology from the University of Cambridge. His
research interests encompass the characterisation of all the types of
self-inflicted cellular and molecular damage that constitute mammalian aging
and the design of interventions to repair and/or obviate that damage. Dr. de
Grey is a Fellow of both the Gerontological Society of America and the American
Aging Association, and sits on the editorial and scientific advisory boards of
numerous journals and organisations. He is a highly sought-after speaker who
gives 40-50 invited talks per year at scientific conferences, universities,
companies in areas ranging from pharma to life insurance, and to the public.

How « systemic economy » principles could become the keys for regenerative
transition

Today’s debt-based « system » and governance organizing society and economy,
has succeeded great things, but also seriously damaging ecology, climate,
people, and has undermined itself and proven based on unsustainable paradigms.

A new system is « expected », necessary and urgent. This is the goal of our
work. No surprise, it is based on systems thinking and working. A new
philosophy, a new model, a strong methodology based on 10 new tools for value
assessment, building purpose, create alliances, etc. and experience of a dozen
programs on live projects have reached us a lot on how to build these next
generation businesses and leadership models.

This exposé will be fully interactive.

Post-graduate School of Thinking
Applications for 2021/22 academic year are now open

Many of the problems we face are the unfortunate outcome of the malpractice of
thinking. The practice of thinking is too impactful, its consequences too
potent, for us to afford not to pay attention to how it can be continuously
advanced and refined. For exactly this purpose the VUB (Vrije Universiteit
Brussel) has created a unique academic project — the School of Thinking!

The generalist curriculum of the Postgraduate School of Thinking is addressed
to working professionals whose interests are focused on complex, ‘wicked’,
multidisciplinary, convoluted, and unprecedented phenomena — and particularly
to those, for whom the outcome of their endeavors critically depends on the
quality of thinking. The primary aim of the programme is for the participants
to develop the capacity to bring their thinking performance beyond the
threshold of their already familiar and expected individual ’ordinary’: again
and again! To develop this capacity, the participants acquire a combination of
skills, theoretical knowledge, and above all the experience of integrating
these into their everyday practice of thinking: the moment-by-moment workings
of cognition.
