Virus hunters
By Daniel Lyons
any viruses are created as pranks. In fact any clever 14-year-old can
create a computer virus. There are lots of viruses floating around--about
13,000 at last count, with 300 new little meanies being created each month,
according to the International Computer Security Association.
Some viruses are created by angry employees hoping to wreak havoc on a
company's computer system. Symantec and Network Associates face the
daunting task of keeping up with these malcontents.
Symantec has a 30-member lab called the Symantec Anti-Virus Research Center
(SARC), which does nothing but find new viruses to stamp out. Network
Associates has an 85-strong team called Anti-Virus Emergency Research Team
(AVERT) to hunt viruses.
The labs put out monthly updates for antivirus programs, with fixes for all
the new viruses they've found. Superkeen customers can get updates on a
daily or even hourly basis.
About 70 percent of viruses created these days are "macro viruses," little
scripts that travel in word processing and spreadsheet files. "Most of them
are copycat viruses, imitations of viruses that we've already seen, and a
lot of them are technically not very well done," says Gene Hodges, who runs
the AVERT team at Network Associates.
But some are tough. It took researchers 28 hours to crack the highly
destructive "XF/Paix.A" virus that appeared in France in January.
The biggest emerging threat comes from Java applets and ActiveX controls.
These are programs that reside on web pages and are downloaded by users.
Hostile applets could damage computers, just like viruses. "This is the
next major threat to corporations," Hodges says.
Network Associates and Symantec have developed ways to combat hostile
applets. But that won't stop hackers from trying.
