But the client DOES use GTP to speak to the engine.   The
idea is that your engine might want to have information
about the opponent.   The way Lazarus will use this is
to put this information in it's own log files.   When
I'm browsing the logs of Lazarus I have no idea how
to locate the actual game or who the opponent is, but 
with this you can.    

Of course you are free to not use this system but I
felt that it would be useful to programmers.
