For the typical person in the U.S. the thing you prune would naturally be a bush. "Unpruning" something brings up a humorous mental picture of vainly trying to stick the clipped branches back on.
I should mention that while the idea is not new (and I've tried it unsuccessfully myself in the past), I found looking at the Mango and CrazyStone papers very helpful in this regard. For me, looking at them both together was greater than the sum of the parts. Using these papers as a guide, I was able to make my program 100 ELO stronger using progressive unpruning/widening.
