Did they really allow access to remote computers?
Yes. Golois was running on a cluster of 16 machines. I believe Edward
meant a 4-core machine (not 4 4-core machines). He was interviewed right
after his game against Crazy Stone, if I remember correctly. Hardware

Crazy Stone was using a remote PC with 4 cores.
