You can of course type those commands directly to an engine to help
debug the format (to see what works and what is expected to come back)
and gnugo probably has the best gtp implementation.   

It would be nice for debugging controllers to be able to simulate an
engine by typing commands "as if" you were the engine (not the
controller.)   I would not be surprised if gogui has a tool that can do
something like that.
