People sometimes ask me how to get their bot on KGS rated. I am posting this to explain the issues.

If the bot is not "yours", but a build of GNU Go or some other program that you haven't written yourself, you won't be able to get it rated. I am not going to explain why, just forget it.

If you have written the bot yourself, and I am aware of this and believe that you and the bot are genuine, then I can try to help you. Email your request to me, and I will pass it on with my endorsement. Or if you don't want my endorsement, send it direct to [email protected].

I should explain the issue of stability. Bots play a lot of games and acquire stable ratings, and other players' ratings depend on their bot games. So a bot which appears on KGS, gets rated as 25k, plays hundreds of games, and then improves to 15k, is going to do a lot of damage to the rating system. So if you have a new weak bot, and you are working on it and expect to improve it, then they won't be willing to rate it. A rated bot should be a stable build, and should not be changed. If you get a rated bot account, and then find a way to make your bot stronger, don't run the new build with the old rated account. Apply for a new account for the new stronger build.
