How quiet the machine is will be a function of which cooling units you
install. When I researched coolers for my octal, I ignored the noise
factor. I honestly don't know if these are quiet or not, but it is not a
consideration for me.

In general, Linux users don't think as much about where the machine is
physically located - this is a cultural thing. The phrase "personal
computer" is not part of the original Unix culture and even to this day
there is little need to have the machine physically next to you, although
these days most Linux users configure their machines as personal
workstations.

In my case, the octal is going in the basement. It does not need to be
quiet! It is not to be used as a personal workstation but as a workhorse.
My desktop machine does not need to be very powerful and is used for
checking email and browsing the web!

There are several factors that affect the comprises you make with the
cooling units:

    1. space
    2. noise
    3. price
    4. quality

If you don't care about 1 or more of these, you have a lot more options.
