There is one possible way for the long range (used many times
in chess/computer-chess):
When you have a commercial go program on your computer
and contacts to strong/professional go players you can
arrange "in-official" games by yourself.

I did so myself several years ago, for instance in
2003/2004 with Catalin Taranu[3p] and Saijo Masataka [8p].

You can prod a little here and there.
But in the end you should let the programmer choose his own good time.
He is the one that is the most acutely aware of the chinks in his armor.
