Mark, > I think doubling the playouts gains in the neighborhood of 70 ELO points
That's true only when the opponent is already much weaker and you win 90% of the games. If you start from a point where you win about 50% of the games, then doubling the playouts gains more than 100 elo. If you are much weaker than the opponent (winning 10% of the games) then doubling the playouts gains more than 200 elo. > Doubling from 7 to 14 would lose 7*10 ELO, equaling the gain of the extra playouts. After that, adding threads should actually lose ELO This is not at all what I observe with pachi. It scales very well from 8 to 16 threads, gaining more than 100 elo. Unfortunately I do not have machines with more than 24 cores so I can't test beyond 24 threads. I am eagerly waiting for systems with hundreds of cores (which will be available in a few years), I think they will be perfect for go. Jean-loup
