That's true only when the opponent is already much weaker and you win 90% of
the games. If you start from a point where you win about 50% of the games,
then doubling the playouts gains more than 100 elo. If you are much weaker
than the opponent (winning 10% of the games) then doubling the playouts
gains more than 200 elo.

This is not at all what I observe with pachi. It scales very well from 8 to
16 threads,
gaining more than 100 elo. Unfortunately I do not have machines with more
than 24 cores
so I can't test beyond 24 threads. I am eagerly waiting for systems with
hundreds
of cores (which will be available in a few years), I think they will be
perfect for go.
