I'm not sure that is satisfactory explanation. Even after 100000s of
simulations, you cannot disable the ratchet after*once*  in the game
you had to set it (i.e. the prospects got worse than before).

I'd have few of hand-waving explanations myself, but I think this
requires some serious analysis and more experiments.
One last thought on this. In a handicap game black and white essentially have the same plan - let white close the gap.
The only difference ofcourse is the projected speed of white catching up.
Now if black finds himself in a position where he could increase the komi given to white, he is essentially overachieving. And the utility of that may be quite low, and worth less than an improved winrate.
