This is the older version So, in my opinion, he did get the correct driver (the older one is the last to support W2k). But, as to why it is not showing up in device manager... Perhaps it is hidden. (Select View, Show Hidden Devices will show any hidden). He could also try doing a scan for hardware changes to see if it will show up. If not, then something is preventing it.
