I would try to get a very high shield cable, usually best buy sells these in a monster brand. They are very overpriced but ifyou do not want the background noise I would try that.
Also try a different input on your stereo, depending if you have either a receiver or a boombox it would degrade. The receivers have aux inputs that are horrible, I use my computer with a hifi receiver hooked up to the CD/DVD channel, can make my house shake from my computer, but I use all monster wires or home made ones.
