Sounds like the back light is out on the LCD, happens a lot. If its under warranty you can get the manufacturer to replace it. If its not under warranty, see if you can get one off of Ebay, buying from Compaq (HP) will be expensive. Depending on what you find, and if you pay someone to replace it for you, sometimes its cheaper to buy a new laptop.
Try the power adapter though, if your old one is screwy, you may be getting some faulty amps/wattage or something, that could've blown your back light, or could be the reason its not working right.
