Headphone/Speakers Issue with Vista
The problem I am having is odd. With sound from either music or video
playing through the internal laptop speakers all is ok, on plugging
the headphones into the jack, the speakers are muted but no sound
comes out of the headphones although sounds/notification ‘bleeps’ come
over the headphones fine. On opening the playback devices both
speakers and headphones are showing as plugged in and working with the
green tick on the headphones (still no sound through them) the sound
level bars to the right of the shown devices are indicating sound
playing, but only on the speakers (but no sound comes from the
speakers). The Headphones sound levels are showing nothing. On right-
clicking the headphones I do not get the ability to select the
headphones as default. If I disconnect the headphones, the internal
speakers take over as expected.

If I open a file in Windows Media with the headphones plugged in they
work fine. However if I unplug them all sound ceases and a warning box
shows ‘audio device disconnected or re-configured, verify that the
audio device is re-connected and play the item again’. In the
‘Sounds’ box the headphones show ‘not plugged in’ and the red downward
arrow shows when unplugged and vice versa. This only sounds like a
minor issue, but it's very annoying and I am sure it has only begun
fairly recently. Many thanks if anyone can help me.
