For most of the recent versions, Adobe hid it well. Go to Help | Check
for Updates. Wait for the updater to assess your version. You should
then see a dialogue box showing the a "Download and Install Updates"
and "Cancel" buttons. Select neither. Instead look to the left and
click on "Preferences". Uncheck the boxes for both "Choose
Applications to Update" and "Automatically check for Adobe Updates".
Click on OK then Quit in the next dialogue box. That should do it. I
know this works for version 8.x and I'm pretty sure it is the same for
version 9.x.
