Or you could go to Start...Control Panel...Printers (and Faxes), right
click on your default printer and click "Properties".  Then "Printing
Preferences".  There you can set it to the black cartridge by default
for all prints, then when you do want to print in color you would set
the color cartridge in the program you are printing from.

Does dramatically cut down on buying new (or refilling old) color
cartridges.
