Coalwater, Although I'm not a programmer by trade, I have learned some of it in the past.
I'd assume the best strategy would be to learn as many programming languages as you can so as to understand programming more fully in general. As far as what programming languages to learn, I'd suggest learning the languages that are used the most or up-and-coming languages. php is now used by lots of websites like facebook, Wikipedia, but then there's also the ever useful Java. Maybe your best bet is to ask a programmer in the field, someone who's already working as a programmer for a medium-to-large sized company.
