Since I am not a Mac person I am just using an educated guess ...

This sounds more like a networking type issue such as networking
errors,
dns host problems, etc.
Have you tried Firefox for Mac? If so, does it do the same?
(If it does then I would be much more likely to suspect networking
problems).
