First, to go to device manager, for the average novice...
Right click on your 'My Computer' and click on 'Manage'
When the computer management console comes up you will
see, under 'system tools' 'Device Manager'
OR, right click on 'My Computer' and click on 'Properties',
then select the 'Hardware' tab and click on the
'Device Manager' button.

Next... you will never get to the internet with the 1394
connection unless you are connected to a modem (DSL,
or cable) through the 1394 cable/connection and this is
an almost unheard of scenario. With a notebook you will
either be connecting via wireless or wired connection.

Lastly, when in device manager if you see any device
with any symbol like a question mark, or exclamation
mark then those are devices which need drivers
and since you will not be able to download them
you will need to get them on either cd/dvd or flash disk drive.

Big question...
Since most HP notebooks have a recovery partition from
which you can re-install to factory condition, did you try
that??? If not... why not? (did the person who did the
'partial' recovery not know what they were doing?)
When you power on the notebook, at the bottom,
under the logo there will be something like...
F1=Setup   F10=Recover
What, on yours, is there?
