Standby is meant only for short periods of time (for laptops). If you
are
doing this for long periods of time, then yes - the battery will go
dead on you.

For laptops you can get the 'resume' functionality - where you start
off
where you were last - using 'Hibernate'. Hibernate saves off the state
of the OS and applications and does an actual power off. But when you
power back on instead of loading the OS fresh it loads the saved state
and you can resume where you left off.
