Depending on the laptop the battery can be many things, a lot of
laptops have built in surge suppression so you cannot run the laptop
on AC power without a battery also. Some laptops are the opposite,
and can run without a battery and run purely on AC power alone.

But if you are questioning whether different operating systems require
a battery then the answer is no, it would be the type of laptop you
own.

Many operating systems can either drain or keep your battery charge
more efficiently. Windows 7 is much better then Windows Vista, but
Mac OSx seems to be up there with Unix/Linux as far as excellent
battery life.
