This particular Windows stop usually occurs when the windows registry is damaged. you will need to copy the restore point copies of the registry. The best way for non-technical people is to boot up on a 'live' cd to do the copy (and rename since in the directory where the restore points are kept they have been renamed (for example - _LOCAL_MACHINE_SOFTWARE which is the SOFTWARE registry hive, or _LOCAL_MACHINE_SYSTEM which is the SYSTEM hive) during the restore point capture process.
