Back when I was tinkering (and building) with my own PC, I viewed it as a hobby in and of itself -- sort of akin to some Linux users who enjoy tinkering with the OS. Doing it just because I enjoyed doing it.
Oh, and I constantly alter the Windows interface, a bunch of people at work do as well.
