Macs last a long time. They don't break, generally. We still use my 10-year-old Mac, but to make it more useful, it has an extra hard drive, a DVD burner, more RAM, USB, FireWire, and a new processor, some fitted by using a Dremel Mototool. It was a quality computer when I bought it, but to keep it somewhat up-to-date, we make a lot of changes.

I disagree with your Chevy/Caddy/Porche analogy. I have friends who have modded their Porsches. Acuras [RSX] are great for turning into super 'rice-burners'. I might want to mod a 1997 Honda Civic. I wouldn't waste time with a 2004 Dodge Neon. If you start with a piece of junk, you'll end up with a piece of junk. Mod something that's very good and you end up with something awesome, like the water-cooled overclocked G5s.

You may not remember that the Bondi iMacs had some extra undocumented hardware. One was the "mezzanine" slot. The other was a video card that could handle an external monitor. The iMac was begging to be hacked, and it was. Last month the AppleTV was hacked on the day it was released.
