"Maybe you need to consider a more basic web authoring program than
Dreamweaver. It can be almost as user hostile as Quark XPress, and as
spectacularly effective, too."

I'm knee-deep in Dreamweaver right now, but I'm curious. Does anyone
have suggestions for free or inexpensive web-authoring programs?

Also, it seems that the wave of the future is CSS, which is replacing a
lot of HTML tags (e.g. font tags) and a lot of the ways people used to
do websites (e.g. tables). Do any available shareware or freeware
WYSIWYG's incorporate this new emphasis on CSS?

BTW, for books: I went to the big Barnes and Noble in Bethesda and
looked through every single Dreamweaver book they had. Unfortunately,
they didn't have the Dreamweaver Bible for Dreamweaver 8, but I did find
two outstanding titles:

1. "Creating a Web Page in Dreamweaver 8" by Nolan Hester (Peachpit
Press). Just the basics; short, cheap, clear, and well produced.

2. "Ten Ton Dreamweaver" by Geoff Blake (Peachpit Press). Expensive,
but a systematic presentation of the material. Extra, "BTW" material is
presented in sidebars, where it doesn't get in the way of the main
"narrative"; useful end-of-chapter reviews are included. There's even
an attempt at humor, some of which works (the "How to Dress Like a
Designer" feature on p. 49 is right on target). My only reservation:
does ANYBODY still use frames?
