Paula, you and your son have run afoul of one of Window's
idiosyncrasies in regards to wireless networks. Steve Gibson of
grc.com has provided a lot of information on configuring wireless
for Windows on his Web site and in his Security Now podcast. Check
out <http://www.grc.com/sn/notes-081.htm>, which also references
the notes to episode 82 and provides links to a Microsoft
Knowledgebase article and an optional (should be mandatory) update
to Windows wireless client. I have followed all of Steve's
recommendations, including the update of the wireless client, and
it all works well for me.
Thank, Roger
I actually get Steve's Security Now podcasts and listen with half an
ear. <g> I don't understand much of it but usually gain some
valuable information. I know he now recommends WPA instead of WEP
but I didn't even find that option available on my son's setup so we
used WEP. He's in a relatively secure area where that should be ok.
And his machine has the WEP key saved but still won't connect. I"ll
check Steve's website and see if I can find an answer there.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of
arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather
to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body
thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a
ride!" Have a wonderful day!
