I have a cheap Dell color laser with the cartridges in a carousel, but I 
don't think the paper makes 4 passes. It prints too quickly for that. I 
think it deposits the 4 colors of toner on the transfer roller and then 
makes one paper pass. I'm surprised at how well it works. Never had a 
paper jam in a year and a half of use.
