The solution, involving running Check for Updates manually and then
clicking Preferences "when it comes back" doesn't work because as soon
as I start Adobe Reader, adobeupdater.exe starts and goes into a
processing loop. (Trying to Check for Updates at that time, has no
affect.)

If I check Preferences directly, without running Check for Updates
manually, I can't find an option for enabling or disabling Check for
Updates.

Thanks for the feedback, never the less.

Ralph
