I prefer to avoid the Local Folders. I "lost" a few accounts that way,
and had to go into the Account Settings to reestablish the correct path
for my messages. Rarely happens otherwise, except when the hard drive
runs out of space unexpectedly.
With 7 [soon 8] accounts for different purposes, I keep most separate.
Instead of using Local Folders, I created filters to automatically send
email from 3 of the accounts to the inbox for my default account. The
messages are also sorted into subfolders and color coded. When I
download mail for my default account, it also downloads linked accounts.
It takes a bit more effort to set this up than using the Local Folders,
but it makes important messages easier to find, and deletes more spam,
too. In my own way I'm creating my own version of global/local accounts
that works best for me.
