If you are interested in a non-computer solution, Panasonic makes a DVD VCR combo unit that transfers video tapes to DVDs very well. I have DMR ES30 and DMR ES40, and I'm very pleased with them. I don't know the model number for models currently in the stores.

When copying, these machines automatically divide the material into five-minute "chapters," which I find very useful. You can also set them up to record off the air to DVD. Panasonic customer support has been relatively easy to reach, and very knowledgeable when I reach them.

I have thrown away almost all the originals. I just didn't have room for them. I kept a few rare things like family movies. I'm hoping to play these disks for a long time. I'm willing to keep an old DVD player around just to play them... that's my current strategy. I wish I knew more about how long the storage media will last... I'm using Taiyo Yuden disks. I'm told cool dry dark storage conditions increase the life of DVD disks.

The MC3 doesn't seem to have a tuner. I wouldn't get one that couldn't
be used for recording programs when I was finished with it. And I
wouldn't mess with DL double layer DVDs. Too expensive, too much
trouble. They'll never catch on.

PS Don't throw away the originals. You'll likely need to record again
on whatever the next format becomes.
